Draw-a-Scientist Test (DAST)

by J.M., Associate Dean, , 4

Some reviewers have commented upon how this tool really measures the media's portrayal of scientists. This is a very valid viewpoint. We have year's of evidence to show this is true (we use this survey in a Science in the Cinema course). But if you use the survey and get a result that is different from the standard that is found normally, then it shows that your activity has been able to break a very strong negative stereotype of scientists, that they are males with weird hair or bald, wear glasses, wear a white lab coat with pocket pencil protectors, and are holding a beaker or a test tube.
