| Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs Introduction GEAR UP was a U.S. Department of Education program that partners institutions of higher education with public schools with the goal of significantly increasing the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in post-secondary education. GEAR UP followed a cohort model. In the first round of this initiative, GEAR UP focused its services on the classes of 2005 and 2006 and worked with these two "classes" from the time they entered seventh grade until their high school graduation. Harvard was one of eleven colleges and universities that were partnered with Boston public schools through the GEAR UP in Boston Project, a collaboration between the Boston Higher Education Partnership and the Boston Public Schools. Harvard worked with the Grover Cleveland Middle School in Dorchester, and Madison Park Technical Vocational High School To promote the success of the students at its partner schools, PEAR created an intra-university collaboration between PEAR, the Graduate School of Education, the Office of Government and Community Affairs, Phillips Brooks House, the Harvard College Admissions Office and many other departments throughout the University. Harvard and its partner schools worked together to provide GEAR UP students with a wide range of services and opportunities designed to increase students' interest in and preparation for higher education.
